Description: In recent years, James Burnett has worked in the style of gestural abstaction. But before 1990, much of Burnett's work was representational. In the exhibition catalogue "East River School" essayists Sandy Straus and John Roselli wrote: "E All You Can B--see detail--depicts the US Armed Forces recruiting center in Times Square. The center is a chromium kiosk about the size and appearance of some hinterland Dairy Queen, inundated with its sappy sloganeering, towered over by the Fuji Film building covered in its entirety by the Fiju logo. In a world of 'smart' bombs and too-clever-by-half politicians the 'new world order' gains layers of meaning the more comprehensive our vision becomes." James Burnett employs cartoon-like simplification and Pop Art techniques to communicate his message in vivid, graphic terms. View detail.
