Description: In 2003, James Burnett adds to his long-running series of paintings whose subject is idealized places--civilizations of the mind. Over time, this body of work has included tiny gouaches and large oils, all with abstracted landscape structure. The "Wilbur Flats" works are painted with a brush as broad as a housepainter's with confident strokes that place Burnett firmly in the camp of the gestural abstract painters. This work also has some beautifully detailed passages and an underpainting of the yellow with a fleshy pink color that is early De Kooning.
