Description: This delightful bronze figure entitled "Unicyclist" is from series of acrobat sculptures by Chaim Gross an Austrian born, American expressionist sculptor.
In his depicting of a pretty young woman balanced on a unicycle, Chaim Gross (1904-1991) reveals the influence of Cubism on his early to mid-career sculpture: Gross constructs her from geometric forms which he then softens into a bright and lyrical wasp-waisted figure. View woman's torso detail. View Unicyclist left side. View Unicyclist back View Unicyclist right. Acrobats remained a significant theme through much of Chaim Gross' lifetime of work. Author Josef Vincent Lombardo in his 1949 book "Chaim Gross, Sculpture" illustrates this work and writes that is either unique or only 1 of 2 in this size. We believe the latter number to be accurate. The bronze has very dark brown patina and is inscribed: Chaim Gross; the base bears the foundry mark: Bedi-Rassy. This sculpture relates to a 1957 piece in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum entitled Three Acrobats on a Unicycle. A delightful, small scale bronze suggesting balance and motion, "Unicyclist" is suitable for a tabletop, mantlepiece or free-standing pedestal. This lovely bronze figure would also be appropriate as an garden sculpture or terrace ornament for an intimate outdoor space. The provenance of this sculpture is the estate of a collector from New York City.
