Description:
Poet Emily Dickinson's home in Amherst, Massachusetts inspired Betsey Garand's 2003 series of black and white monoprints and monotypes entitled "ED Pentimento". Images of Indian pipe "ghost plants" from the dark forest floor and a view through a keyhole evoque the quiet and isolation of Dickinson's circumscribed world. The image above right shows a close-up of the monoprint "ED Pentimento XI"; click here to see the placement of the image on its sheet of fine paper. Like a monotype, a monoprint is a unique artwork; it differs from a monotype in having some fixed lines on the printing plate.
Extensively exhibited, Betsey Garand is also represented in public collections including: Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Arkansas Art Center, UCLA Grunewald Center for the Graphic Arts and Tokyo Geijutsu Daigaku (Japan). Formerly a teacher of drawing and printmaking at Princeton University, Betsey Garand currently serves on the faculty of Amherst College.
