In this painting are the words "the abyss of heaven hath swallowed up thy form" and "deeply hath sunk the lesson" from "To a Waterfowl" a William Cullen Bryant poem. His works are not puzzles that snap into place, but these paintings do reward the viewer who puzzles over them.
