Description: "Wilbur Flats GB" was inspired by James Burnett's visit to the 2002 touring exhibition "The Quilters of Gee's Bend". "Those women took me to school," says Burnett. "As I walked through that exhibition, I found inspiration to last me for years. I mixed the purple in this painting to match a color in one of those quilts." James Burnett's "Wilbur Flats" works are painted with a brush as broad as a housepainter's with a few confident strokes that place Burnett firmly in the camp of the gestural abstract painters. View close-up. With simplicity and conviction, Burnett distills painting to its vital essence. He uses the white of the paper as masterfully as if he had painted it on. "Wilbur Flats GB" is painted in gouache and on heavy aquarelle paper with irregular edges that makes it suitable for float-mounting. (The edges are masked in this photo, because the work was still drying.) Read more about the background of this abstract painter in James Burnett studio visit at Biddington's CREATIVE PROCESS.
