Description: Contemporary sculptor Javier Astorga reconciles European and Mexican artistic traditions in his figurative sculpture. In a recent series of works, "La Huasteca desnudo del tiempo (The Huastecs Removed from Time)" Astorga studied ancient masks, statues and images from the Huastec people of western Mexico. This assemblage sculpture actually incorporates a contemporary Huastec carved & painted wooden mask With the contrast of materials and the spiritual power of the mask image behind the wire scrim, this work is intense and dramatic. This artwork is appropriate as an interior sculpture--on a pedestal or in a niche.
