Description: Contemporary sculptor Javier Astorga melds European and Mexican artistic traditions for inspiration in making his metal figurative sculpture. "Mask of Tancuayalab (Mascara de Tancuayalab)" makes reference to a priest, or seat of power, in the ancient Huastec culture of Mexico. In this series of works, Astorga studies anicent masks and images, then brings them to life again using contemporary materials. This stainlees steel construction has the vivacity and fluidity typical of Astorga's work. This artist maniupulates the material with expert ease: he draws in metal. This elegant medium-scale sculpture is appropriate for an interior as a tabletop or pedestal piece.
