Since a seminal trip to Turkey in 1996, Diane Churchill's art has been influenced by the opulent colors of the East and by imagery from matriarchal cultures rich with goddess representations. In her 2001-2002 series of paintings on paper, Churchill has become increasingly abstract exploring the shimmering colors and rich textures of Asia but with less specific historical references. "Red/Gold #1" is a strong transitional piece--one that includes elements of her "Medallions" series, foretells the "Red/Gold" series and more than nods to Mark Rothko with whom Churchill studied during the year prior to his death.
