Description: After a seminal trip to Turkey in 1996, Diane Churchill grew interested in adopting imagery of women from Eastern matriarchal cultures whose tradition is rich with goddess representations. This work entitled "Medallions" in from an opulent red series made in 1999 and uses the ancient symbol of the twin-tailed mermaid. Churchill's most recent series "The Shimmering World" is increasingly abstract using the rich colors and textures of the
