Napierala's abstraction is very 21stcentury: Each application of paint and its subsequent removal veils the last, both concealing and revealing what lies beneath. These repetitive abstractions are painted in layers--part hard-edge/part painterly--totally zen. Napierala, who is known for his paintings on wood, is represented in the Chase Manhattan collection.
