Description: Michael Eastman employs words and figures as though they were abstract elements. In his "Printed Matter Redesigned" series, Eastman sets about throwing off his commercial design traces to vastly improve familiar print media--in this instance the Science Section of the "New York Times". Eastman often uses graffiti-like writing and faux-primitive marks in making his paintings. Since this artist enjoys aping the look of naive art, we place him in that category. But, Eastman's approach to his work is extremely cerebral, often witty, and quite abstract--not at all the urgent, direct attitude typical of a naif or outsider artist. Visit the Tribeca studio of Michael Eastman whose work is included in the collection of Hirshhorn Museum (Washington, DC).
