Description: Michael Eastman employs words and figures as though they were abstract elements. In "RUZ" the words are those of Lost Generation poet John Peale Bishop "I think of all you might have done". The background in this painting is heavily worked. Detail 1. Detail 2. Eastman often uses graffiti-like writing and faux-primitive marks in making his paintings. Since this artist enjoys aping the look of naive art, we place him in that category. But, Eastman's approach to his work is extremely cerebral and quite abstract--not at all the urgent, direct attitude typical of a naif or outsider artist.
