Description: Michael Eastman employs words and figures as though they were abstract elements. The result is an engaging tension created by naive marks, sophisticated composition and--in "C Pepper"--a crisp, glossy background. Eastman often uses graffiti-like writing and faux-primitive marks in making his paintings. Since this artist enjoys aping the look of naive art, we place him in that category. But, Eastman's approach to his work is extremely cerebral and quite abstract--not at all the urgent, direct attitude typical of a naif or outsider artist. Visit the Tribeca studio of Michael Eastman who is represented in public collections including Hirshhorn Museum (Washington, DC) and Mauntner-Markof Collection (Vienna, Austria).
