Description: "A House by the Pacific Ocean" is from a series of "plausible landscapes" by Israel-born artist/illustrator Benzion Shechter who constructs his compositions with disparate elements based on photographs. Combining structures, vistas and vegetation from a variety of sources, Shechter makes detailed compositions that--at first glance--appear real but are entirely invented. His color distortions and precise detail enhance the sensation that nothing in the painting is quite as it seems. This work is painted in gouache on paper. Ben Shechter's work is represented in major collections including: Boston Museum of Fine Art, Brooklyn Museum, Guggenheim Museum Library, Whitney Museum and New York Public Library.
