Description:
John Clem Clarke uses familiar objects as subjects for his paintings. Clarke is usually grouped with the photo-realists. While technically accurate, (he does work from combinations of photos using realistic images), this description fails to conveyhow much Clarke likes to play with paint and traditional painting concepts. In "Ship in Fog" there is a tension between the cheerful colors and the perilous situation. The looming ship harks back to posters from the glamorous era of ocean crossingson the Normandy. Clarke has an extensive museum collection, public commissions and auction record pedigree. (Recent auction prices range from about $2000-$18,000). The Museum of Modern Art (New York), Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Whitney Museum of American Art (New York) and the Los Angeles County Museum all have examples of his work in their collections.
