Susan Kaprov Mural "Urban Helix" 2002

8.5' x 54' Fired Enamel on Glass
6 Metrotech Center, Brooklyn, NY

KAPROV: Installed in 2002, "Urban Helix" is a large--8 foot by 54 foot--work that merges traditional painting with computer-generated design. It is a composite of images inspired by science and technology that are set within a colorful, imaginary urban grid. Fabricated in fired enamel on glass in Munich, the work took eighteen months to complete. It is the largest and most complex of its kind to date.

KAPROV: My art is about playing with fragments to create something whole.

KAPROV: As with so much art, my digital prints of flowers happened by accident. I was on my way to a friend's house--taking flowers--some of the petals fell onto my scanner and ruined an image I was composing. I was annoyed, but I liked the way the scanned petals read.

KAPROV: Now I spend hundreds of dollars a week buying beautiful flowers in wonderful colors with glorious convoluted petals and leaves, then dismembering them for my prints. I like the idea of seeing the pieces as part of a puzzle. This print series called "Nature...Last Modified" deals with flowers and plants in various stages of fragmentation.

KAPROV: I don't enhance the color of the flowers, which are real. They must be very fresh and alive in order to create this work. The way I use the scanner reveals the inner shapes and translucent quality of the petals and the leaves. With these gladiolus the petals become almost like a butterfly or a dragonfly's wings.

KAPROV: I like the work of Gerhard Richter and Jennifer Bartlett. Like them, I paint with super-saturated color and synthesize abstract and realistic images.

KAPROV: The digital prints are composed by working backwards with the foreground elements put in place first.

KAPROV: At first glance, people are seduced by the lushness of the colors and form. Then they discover they are actually visual puzzles composed of fragmented flowers and leaves.

Detail of Pastel on Black Etching Paper, 1992

KAPROV: My work has always been influenced by science and the philosophy behind it. I have worked with scientists from Bell Labs and NASA. The pastels from the early 90's are inspired by images that reveal the formation of stars and galaxies. My recent puzzle paintings use the concepts of randomness and uncertainty, two things in life that terrify me. So, I turn these elements into playthings.

KAPROV: In the puzzle paintings, the individual puzzle components are almost a summary of contemporary styles--from David Hockney to Jasper Johns.

KAPROV: The element of randomness in the puzzle pieces is essential. I paint these pieces individually like small easel paintings, not knowing what their place in the "big picture" will be until they are re-assembled. Only after that do I see what the entire work looks like. It's an aesthetic game.
